Research abstract
This study develops the method for constructing an interactive on-board, artificially intelligent training system for pilot and crew tasks that is portable, robust, high-fidelity, and constructed of reuseable components. Advances in computer hardware, software, and mathematical techniques shall be integrated to provide a single low weight, low cost interactive embedded tactical training system offering significant increases in situational awareness for flight crews of any military and commercial aircraft. This system can provide the flexibility to be used for both ground-based or airborne operations on either conventional or MIL-STD 1553 bussed aircraft. Furthermore, this system shall be generically developed providing for a minimal maintenance structure and inventory while simultaneously assessing combined air arms operations. The interactive embedded tactical trainer shall be be used during flight and crew training, mission operations (including austere basing), mission debriefs, and maintenance actions. Airworthiness qualification of this system is easily anticipated since it shall replicate all data and information found within NATOPS or commerical flight manuals and logistics supportability/maintenance structures using a generic approach to algorithm development. Results from this study shall include development of systems requirements for the portable, intelligent, multi-media training systems, construction of generic aircraft flight predicition algorithms, identification of target aircraft and training scenarios of importance, and a technical report specifying alternative systems architectures with recommendations.
