Research abstract
The conceptual and preliminary design of an electron beam source for an affordable, field deployable Electron Beam Dry Scrubbing (EBDS) system is proposed. In the EBDS systems of interest, a pulsed electron beam system with average power of up to 50 kW and electron energy up to 600 keV is needed. cost, size, weight, and effectiveness set the principal engineering constraints. These translate into efficiency, component lifetime, and component cost as the principal technical issues. The proposed conceptual design study considers two types of electron sources: a short pulsed diode source and a longer pulsed, high power microwave driven rf linac. Both of these approaches utilize proprietary EBDS techniques and data developed by Berkely Research Associates, Inc. in conjunction with previous preparations for DNA's 'E-Scrub' Program for scrubbing SO(2) and NOx from the stacks of coal-burning electrical power plants. The Phase I objectives are to complete the conceptual design study, select the most promising approach and perform the preliminary design of the electron beam source which would be constructed in Phase II as a demonstration prototype.
