Research abstract

WHILE IT IS POSSIBLE TO CONTROL THE NOX AND SOX EMISSION OF INCINERATORS AND COAL FIRED BOILERS AND FURNACES WITH PRESENTLY AVAILABLE TECHNOLOGY IT IS EXPENSIVE AND CONSUMES SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNTS OF ENERGY. WITH PRESENTLY AVAILABLE TECHNOLOGY IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO CONTROL THE EMISSION OF SUBMICRON PARTICLES. THESE PARTICLES READILY PENETRATE THE HUMAN BODY'S DEFENSE TO ENTER AND BE RETAINED IN THE LUNGS, ARE HIGHLY ENRICHED IN TOXIC ELEMENTS SUCH AS LEAD, ARSENIC, ANTIMONY, BISMUTH, MERCURY, AND CADMIUM, AND CONTAIN THESE ELEMENTS IN WATER SOLUBLE FORMS. IN THIS PROPOSAL A NEW PROCESS, FLUE GAS SELF SCRUBBING, IS SUGGESTED AS A MEANS BOTH OF CONTROLLING THE EMISSION OF SUBMICRON PARTICLES, AND AS A LESS EXPENSIVE, MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT, METHOD OF NOX AND SOX CONTROL. CRITICAL STEPS WITHIN THIS PROCESS HAVE ALREADY BEEN DEMONSTRATED EXPERIMENTALLY OR ARE DEMONSTRATED HEREWITH BY COMPUTER MODELING. AN EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM IS PROPOSED WHICH WOULD PROVIDE A CREDIBLE PROOF OF CONCEPT FOR THIS NEW PROCESS.
