Research abstract

CFDRC's Phase I effort laid the foundation to successfully build and test an automatically-controlled prototype gel mixing system. The addition of a load cell and linear potentiometer to the AMCOM mixing rig enabled the integration of CFDRC's controlsystems technology to the mixing process. Development of advanced CFD analysis in Phase I provided the unique capability to simulate the non-Newtonian fluid flow aspects of the gel mixing process. CFD simulations in Phase II will be critical to analyzingand optimizing the mixing process or exploring new mixing configurations.Phase II will work toward the design and test of two five gallon propellant mixing systems, one each for the fuel and oxidizer. Fundamental rheological data will be developed to benchmark the CFD code, which will then be used to optimize the componentperformance. CFDRC will examine additional instrumentation, sensing systems and control techniques to both improve the gel mixing and automate the batch process.CFDRC will coordinate the gel propellant definition with TRW and AMCOM FMTI development personnel throughout Phase II to insure all propellant specifications meet or exceed program requirements. CFDRC's Huntsville location provides convenient access tothe AMCOM facilities and personnel, resulting in close coordination of software, hardware and controller development. For increased gel production levels, CFDRC will employ personnel from Morgan Research Corp., a Huntsville-based Omnibus 2000 contractor,in efficient, low-cost and safe operation of the system.
