Research abstract

The long term objective of this project is to demonstrate a hand held system to optically measure the glucose concentration in the aqueous humor of the eye. The specific aims of Phase I are to establish the best measurement wavelengths and to build a laboratory system that will permit spectroscopic measurement of the glucose concentration in the aqueous humor and to establish the correlation between the glucose level in the aqueous humor and peripheral blood. The successful completion of this project will allow non-invasive measurement of glucose and will replace the existing "finger stick" systems that are used for home glucose monitoring. The higher patient acceptance and lower cost of the system will improve the treatment of diabetes. The system will establish the technology of using fiber optics and a graded index lens to precisely locate an optical beam and direct the beam transversely through the cornea and aqueous humor to allow a precise transversely through the cornea and aqueous humor to allow a precise measurement of the glucose concentration. Based on fiber optic technology, it will also be possible to develop a continuous monitor with the optical components concealed in the frames of eyeglasses and the readout system worn as a small unit on a belt. $ = TOTAL AWARD AMTS & NOT LIMITED TO PORTION OF PROJECT RELATED TO SUBJECT OF SEARCH SUBPROJECT $ = TOTAL AWARD AMOUNT DIVIDED BY NUMBER OF SUBPROJECTS SOURCE: CRISP FORMAT F FY 97 LAST UPDATE 04-07-98 1QUERY 1536 ID SEARCH 06/01/98 PAGE 300 --PROJECT NUMBER......1 R43 EY11826-01 INVESTIGATOR NAME/ADDRESS FY 97 WATERMAN, GLENN N IRG/INTRAMURAL UNIT..ZRG7 DIACOR INC AWARD AMOUNT......... $44,000 3191 S 3300 E, SUITE 100A SALT LAKE CITY, UT 84109 PERFORMING ORGANIZATION: DIACOR, INC. Such a "display-reader" would be indispensable to a great number of blind and visually impaired persons, a population estimated to number at least 3 million in the United States alone. The device will be built from a small CCD camera, a PC computer, and a speech and audio output device. Our approach is to use the technology and algorithms of image understanding (segmentation, OCR, pattern matching) to make a general display-reader that can be used to read many different visual displays. The resulting prototype would ultimately lead to a commercial product consisting of a portable, hand-held computer device using a miniature camera for input, and a speech synthesizer for output. The user would hold the device in a prescribed fashion in front of an appliance, and it would read out the current display auditorially. $ = TOTAL AWARD AMTS & NOT LIMITED TO PORTION OF PROJECT RELATED TO SUBJECT OF SEARCH SUBPROJECT $ = TOTAL AWARD AMOUNT DIVIDED BY NUMBER OF SUBPROJECTS SOURCE: CRISP FORMAT F FY 97 LAST UPDATE 04-07-98 1QUERY 1536 ID SEARCH 06/01/98 PAGE 302 --PROJECT NUMBER......1 R43 EY11828-01 INVESTIGATOR NAME/ADDRESS FY 97 CHOW, ALAN Y IRG/INTRAMURAL UNIT..ZRG1 OPTOBIONICS CORP AWARD AMOUNT......... $100,000 191 PALAMINO PLACE WHEATON, IL 60187 PERFORMING ORGANIZATION: OPTOBIONICS CORPORATION TITLE SUBRETINAL SILICON MICROPHOTODIODE RETINAL PROSTHESIS ABSTRACT: DESCRIPTION (Adapted from the Investigator's Abstract): In the last decade there has been rapid progress towards the development of cell transplantation efforts for the potential treatment of retinal degenerative disorders. Retinal transplants have been attempted both in the anterior chamber and the posterior segment of the eye. RPE cells can be transplanted in the host subretinal space, and such transplants seem to protect degenerating photoreceptors in the RCS strain of rats; RPE cell transplants in patients with macular degeneration have recently been attempted. Despite the promising outlook of retinal cell transplantation, there are many features and problems that need to be resolved, including the critical issue of the availability of ex-vivo tissue and the large number of patients that could benefit from such therapy. An alternative approach involves the use of a prosthesis that responds to light by generating an electric signal, which in turn stimulates the visual system. There is sparse evidence suggesting that postreceptoral retinal cells may preserve their function after photoreceptor degeneration, so that they could be activated by transplanted photoreceptors as much as implanted microprostheses. The principal investigator and the Co-investigator have developed semiconductor-based microphotodiode array (SMA) implants, containing individual units of 20x20 um that do not require external power source, and that can be placed permanently in the subretinal space to act as a retinal prosthesis. $ = TOTAL AWARD AMTS & NOT LIMITED TO PORTION OF PROJECT RELATED TO SUBJECT OF SEARCH SUBPROJECT $ = TOTAL AWARD AMOUNT DIVIDED BY NUMBER OF SUBPROJECTS SOURCE: CRISP FORMAT F FY 97 LAST UPDATE 04-07-98 1QUERY 1536 ID SEARCH 06/01/98 PAGE 303 --PROJECT NUMBER......1 R43 EY11939-01 INVESTIGATOR NAME/ADDRESS FY 97 SIEGMUND, WALTER P IRG/INTRAMURAL UNIT..ZRG2 TAPER VISION, R & D CENTER AWARD AMOUNT......... $99,986 3 VISION ROAD POMFRET, CT 06258 PERFORMING ORGANIZATION: TAPERVISION (PARTNERSHIP) TITLE 3-DIMENSIONAL CALIBRATION TARGET--CONFOCAL MICROSCOPY ABSTRACT: Our long term goal is to develop a phantom for use in calibrating and measuring resolution of confocal microscopes using fiber optic technology. Modern microscopy is increasingly quantitative. Size of the observed objects is critical in a number of areas. Resolution is also a necessary parameter in many measurements, and that now includes resolution along the vertical dimension (axial depth into the sample) direction as well as lateral (in the image plane). Calibration of intensity completes the set of quantities needed to make it possible to compare measurements between microscopes or across time. In the reflectance mode this will be done by using different ranges of index differences. Glasses with fluorescent dopants can provide a calibratory for the confocal microscope (CFM) used in a fluorescent mode (now the most common mode in biologial studies). In this mode the calibratory can also be used to measure registration of the images obtained in two wavelength. This proposal is for the development of a calibration standard tool for all these quantities. We will use TaperVision expertise in fiberoptics technology to achieve the necessary dimensions and tolerances for such a measurement tool. The phase I proposal is to evaluate the feasibility of generating such a calibrating target in the right parameters and to show that intensity calibration and fluorescent mode devices can also be constructed using the same basic technology. POTENTIAL COMMERCIAL APPLICATION: The calibrator will be used by developers and users of CFM's to verify performance and to obtain measurements. There are currently 5000 CFM's on the market and their number and applications are expected to rise sharply. $ = TOTAL AWARD AMTS & NOT LIMITED TO PORTION OF PROJECT RELATED TO SUBJECT OF SEARCH SUBPROJECT $ = TOTAL AWARD AMOUNT DIVIDED BY NUMBER OF SUBPROJECTS SOURCE: CRISP FORMAT F FY 97 LAST UPDATE 04-07-98 1QUERY 1536 ID SEARCH 06/01/98 PAGE 304 --PROJECT NUMBER......1 R43 EY11945-01 INVESTIGATOR NAME/ADDRESS FY 97 DUNCAN, DAVID B IRG/INTRAMURAL UNIT..ZRG7 DUNCAN TECHNOLOGIES INC AWARD AMOUNT......... $99,415 11824 KEMPER RD AUBURN, CA 95603 PERFORMING ORGANIZATION: DUNCAN TECHNOLOGIES, INC. TITLE PORTABLE STEREO DIGITAL FUNDUS CAMERA ABSTRACT: The applicant firm proposes the development of a portable digital stereo fundus camera. This technology would enhance the quality and economies of screening and providing care for degenerative diseases of the retina and choroid, specifically diabetic retinopathy. The proposed research will advance the state of ophthalmic imaging and the management of diabetic retinopathy through a fresh approach and new technologies. In Phase I the imaging and display system will be demonstrated by use of a model with the quality of the images assessed by practicing ophthalmic professionals at a major research university. These images will be compared and measured against images from existing commercial systems. During Phase II a prototype unit will be built, tested and evaluated by potential users.
