Research abstract

"The demand for vehicles powered by electric drive technology is growing due to today's more stringent requirements dealing with emissions, energy efficiency, and economics. For military applications, the primary driving forces consist of a desire forreduced fuel consumption, increased electric power generation on-board the vehicles, silent watch capability, and improved maneuverability. UQM Technologies Inc. (UQM) has long been a leader in the development and production of Permanent Magnet BrushlessDC Motors and their power electronic controls. Such drive systems are highly suited for pure electric vehicle applications due to their unmatched power density and efficiency. As a leader in PM brushless technology, UQM has led and participated in manyelectric vehicle production efforts incorporating UQM electric drive systems. Given phase I funding, UQM would research and select the most advanced components necessary for maximum vehicle performance. Using UQM's electric drive simulation tool andNREL's ADVISOR, UQM's Vehicle Engineers will layout a vehicle architecture and control system that optimizes the efficiency of the overall vehicle. The proposed vehicle components will include but are not limited to Lithium Ion batteries, ultracapacitorsfor capturing energy from regenerative braking, steer-by-wire, EMI Reduced PM Motor, Space Vector Modulated Inverter(s), rapid charger, and DC-DC converters.
