Research abstract

A diode pumped gas laser is proposed based on the use of air as both the thermal control and optically active medium. Lasing is on the 1580 nm transition in singlet delta oxygen. The lasing wavelength is tunable over 20 nm and the potential exists forsub-picosecond operation. Use of high efficiency diodes provide the potential for operation with greater than 30% electrical efficiency. Use of a flowing gas optical medium provides for the potential for exceptional beam quality at high power.
