Research abstract
70213 Information about energy consumption in many combustion processes (e.g. boilers) is not easily available to the technicians, system designers, or managers responsible for the equipment. Yet, without this information it is difficult to monitor or improve the efficiency of the combustion process. This project will develop a cost effective system to measure energy consumption. Phase I will develop a prototype energy measurement device as a proof-of-concept and analyze its operation in the field. The prototype will be quickly developed because it will utilize an existing product as a base for the design. The rapid analysis of its operation will allow the product to evolve with technology that will become available in approximately 1 ¿ 2 years. Phase II will move from the prototype stage to the development of a product that will cost a small-volume user approximately $1000. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The measurement of energy consumption is the first step in understanding how to improve the process, save money, and reduce pollution. This product should find use by small industrial heating facilities.
