Research abstract

It has been shown that targets buried in deep clutter such as camouflaged tanks and missile launchers can be identified using spectral band correlation techniques. The narrower the spectral band the more accurate the correlation statistics. What is needed to identify manmade objects buried in deep cluttered backgrounds is an instrument with the capability of tunable multi-spectral image data collection with bandwidth selection and coverage that spans the spectral region from visible to the thermal infrared. The Pacific Advanced Technology Image Multi-spectral Sensor, (IMSS), has the capability to fulfill the Navy's requirements for an adaptive multi- spectral imaging sensor which can be flown on an airborne platform for deep hide target detection. This proposed program will culminate in a multi-spectral sensor that will be ready to integrate into a the Navy's P3 surveillance aircraft. The technical objective of the Phase I effort is to prove feasibility for a conceptual design for a Phase II hardware multi-spectral imaging instrument development effort. Another objective is to secure a Phase II partner willing to financially support the Phase II effort in matching funds. This will allow Pacific Advanced Technology to qualify for the 'fast track program".
