Research abstract
A new high temperature passive damping system is proposed for application to gas turbine engines. This dry-type damper eliminiates the need for lubricant to provide squeeze film damping. THE VENAM (tm) damper consists of a high temperature, high stiffness, composite material with vitreous enamel interlayers, which will dissipate vibrational energy viscoelastically. The effort proposed herein will concentrate on design and fabrication of a prototype damper for a typical gas turbine application and component testing to prove the feasibility of the concept. Elimination of oil lubricated systems from gas turbine engines.
