Research abstract
Fiberoptic links play an important role in future military and commercial systems. One of the most primary uses of digital fiberoptic links is for local area networks (LAN) where data signals as high rates as 1 Gbps are distributed in short to medium distance networks. Fundamental components of digital fiber optic distribution networks are data source, optical transmitter, optical fiber distribution, and optical receiver, clock recovery circuit and decision making circuit. With availability of high-speed optical sources and photodetectors, the focus is now in development of an integrated opto-electronic circuit which would be small in size and low power consuming. Standard clock recovery circuits based on the sample and hold, analog or digital phase lock loops require complicated and high power consuming circuits. The purpose of this proposal is introduction and demonstration of a new approach to design of optical receiver and clock recovery systems. Particularly, a technique based on the push-pull oscillator that is frequency and phase synchronized to the input data signal using injection locked phase lock loop scheme is advocated. Phase I of this work will focus on the analytical and simulation of an integrated optical receiver satisfying the required performance, where as Phase II will concentrate on fabrication, and testing of this product with emphasis on OEIC realization.
