Research abstract
Thermal conductivity of diamond can be greatly improved by reducing the (12)C and (13)C initiated phonon collisions. Removal of (13)C isotope from CH(4) in the Arc-jet CVD produced diamond would drastically improve the thermal management in devices ranging from the nose-cones of missiles to multichip modules. Isotope enrichment of (12)C, or the removal of (13)C, uses a chemical diffusion process (distillation), resulting in a cost of (13)C or (12)C or (18)O of about $100/g. The proposed Garden Hose Gaseous Enrichment method would reduce the cost of these stable isotopes by a factor of 10 or more, and thereby open up the large scale industrial applications for these stable isotopes.
