Research abstract

70053 This project will develop position sensitive micro-photomultiplier arrays with multi anode outputs for use as detectors in nuclear physics experiments. The approach will involve engineering micro-dynode electron amplification arrays and coupling theses systems with photocathodes and anode readout electronics to produce a high-speed position sensitive optical detector. Phase I will engineer and evaluate gated microdynode arrays by micromachining the dynode structures, coating the structures with a suitable material for secondary electron emission, and testing the gain and uniformity of the devices in ultra-high vacuum. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: A micro-photomultiplier array would have scientific, military, and commercial applications including threat warning systems for hostile missle launches, monitoring the movement of nuclear materials, LIDAR systems, sensors to detect chemical and biological agents, optical communication systems, satellite communications, high-speed machine and robotic vision systems, astronomical survey instrementation, and medical and chemical diagnostic instruments.
