Research abstract

The main objective will be to optimize and improve the performance of a low stress (residual cure stress, moisture induced stress, and thermal stress), flexible, abrasion resistant, environmentally compliant, waterborne acrylic marking paint for use onasphaltic airfield pavements. This will be a continuation of the good progress made in our Phase I program, during which UDC marking paint formulations exhibited improved adhesion, flexibility and abrasion resistance. Formulations, componentsconcentrations and application methods will be fine tuned. Among tests to be conducted will be volume of solids, elongation, tensile strength, residual cure stress/hygrothermal stress, water absorption, adhesion to asphaltic pavements, abrasionresistance, and tack free cure time. A large number of formulations will be tested by UDC and the resultant performance will be verified by a subcontractor. UDC will provide materials and process specifications for the innovative materials andprocesses. At the end of Phase II, UDC will provide a detailed report that will include all work performed, resultant data, specifications and a Phase III production plan.
