Research abstract

Coherent laser radar has proven its utility in measuring wind velocity fields up to the stratosphere, detecting wind shear, mapping wake vortices, and tracking air pollutants, yet it remains a diagnostic firmly rooted in the laboratory. The full potential of this technology will not be realized until simple, rugged systems are developed that can be left alone to routinely perform their measurement tasks. We propose to significantly advance toward this goal by first conducting an in-depth study of an eye-safe coherent lidar to determine which parts can be ruggedized and which parts need to be automatically optimized for long-term, unattended operation. Next, we propose to operate a prototype lidar, presently under construction, for extended periods to identify which components drift, and what effect this has on the system's performance. We will develop a signal processing algorithm that will determine, from the measured wind velocity as a function of range, whether a microburst is present, and if so classify its intensity or the danger to aviation it poses. Finally, we will design from scratch a laser radar that incorporates these findings and propose that it be constructed under Phase II of this effort.
