Research abstract

The objective of this project is to conduct a theoretical and experimental investigation of the feasibility of a clean-burning, natural gas-fired thermophotovoltais (TPV) power generator with substantially improved power density for hybrid vehicle applications. The TPV power generator technology under development utilizes a patented breakthrough in internal heat recuperation (IHR) and proprietary optics design. Incorporation of IHR along with efficient optics and photocell technology will allow development of a TPV system with near term fuel to electricity efficiencies in the range of 20 - 30 percent with power densities approaching 2 -4 watts per square centimeter, depending on emitter temperature and optical/photocell efficiency. The Phase I effort will focus on selection and testing of candidate ceramic materials necessary for oxidation-resistant, high intensity, radiant combustion. Radiant intensity will be measured for the experimental bench-scale combustor design for a range of emitter temperatures. A preliminary performance analysis for a TPV photocell (with tailored bandgap) and selective bandpass filter will be developed for the emitter temperature range of interest. This project will also address the specific need for clean (low Nox) combustion possible with porous ceramic structures. These results will be sued to construct a prototype IHR burner/TPV system in Phase II. Anticipated Benefits: The proposed recuperative TPV technology can be applied as auxillary power units in hybrid vehicle applications in military and commercial markets. It also has use in numerous other areas, including gas-fired cogeneration, self-powering of gas applicances, remote power units, and additional uses in the recreational vehicle markets.
