Research abstract
Maxdem has developed novel self-reinforced thermoplastic polyphenylenes, designated Poly-X(TM) resins, which possess unique properties, especially high strength and modulus, and, yet, are projected to be competitively priced with other high performance polymers. This Phase I will fabricate new composite test coupons from the most promising candidate Poly-X(TM) matrix resin and fiber combination. Concurrently, R&D aimed at developing improved "next generation" composites will proceed. A successful effort will demonstrate progress toward achieving the target lightweight-enabling properties. Phase II efforts will focus on solving any remaining barriers (probably fiber-matrix interfacial adhesion) to ultrahigh compression and begin to optimize various parameters (e.g., processability) critical for utilization of the resulting ultra-lightweight composites. New high modulus matrix resins which will enable ultra-lightweight structural composites. Applications include high performance tactical military aircraft, high payload military and commercial transports, and lightweight composites for a variety of aerospace marine, transportation, industrial, and recreational structures.
