Research abstract

Project will develop an inexpensive vehicle identification system capable of identifying vehicles at speeds from 0 to 85 miles per hour using a conventional inductive loop or an overhead reader. System will have the following characteristics: 1) compatible with existing vehicle detector inductive loops already installed at many facilities minimizing implementation costs, 2) utilize low frequency magnetic induction instead of RF radiation to minimize interference with RF communications and localize the data transfer to the lane of interest, and 3) require no FCC license. The system will radiate less than 10E-8 watts of RF power. Phase I will build a breadboard system to demonstrate the concept. Phase II will develop a prototype and thoroughly test it at government and commercial sites. Scentczar's innovative approach willl use a simple collar mounted on the vehicle license plate containing an antenna and the vehicle transponder. No modification to the vehicle or license plate will be required. The collar may be permanently attached to the license plate if desired. Project will be based on theoretical work on loop detectors performed by the Bureau of Public Roads in the 1960's which has never been implemented in hardware.
