Research abstract

In this proposal we consider the incorporation of image processing techniques and adaptive estimation and control algorithms into phase reconstruction and deformable mirror control systems to improve performance in systems such as the AirBorne Laser (ABL)tactical missile defense system and the proposed extended range ABL system for ballistic missile defense. Based on a combination of mathematical techniques for nonparametric branch cut identification and adaptive filtering and control theory, our methodspromise to provide greatly enhanced adaptive optics compensator performance. Scintillation, the turbulence-induced fluctuation of image intensities, is widely regarded as a major problem for adaptive optics systems. The methods we propose herein providethe potential to mitigate significantly the effects of scintillation, thus enhancing adaptive optics performance. We also propose innovative control concepts for deformable mirror actuation. Collaborating with scientists and engineers at UCLA, MZA, andAFRL, we will use wave propagation simulations data and data collected in tests at Lincoln Laboratory's ACL facility to score the performance of these algorithms. Continuing our partnership with Boeing-SVS, the leader in systems engineering for opticalsystems for ABL and other weapon systems, will allow us to leverage the results obtained in this effort into commercial hardware systems in a most efficient and cost-effective manner.
