Research abstract
Not Available A novel hullform with unique capabilities to carry heavy loads, attain planing speeds with minimum power and provide moderately smooth operation in a seaway has been developed. This will be used as a baseline for a comparison with alternative hullforms to support the design of a High Speed/Endurance Mine Warfare Craft. The proposed Phase I program will develop a work breakdown structure associated with the autonomous mine warfare craft which will address the areas of vessel naval architecture, mine warfare capabilities, autonomous control and communication systems and interactivity with mother and sister vessels. The naval architecture approach will be used to establish vessel requirements in terms of payload, speed, range, endurance, handling systems, etc. These requirements will be used to size alternative candidate hull forms, their scantlings and associated power plants to meet the performance and mission goals using the most advanced hydrodynamic and structural analysis modeling methods available. The relative merits of the candidates will then be identified and the most promising recommended for further development in Phase II. Scale model testing of the best candidate(s) may be carried out in the Phase I Option to confirm hull form performance predictions. The future needs of the Navy to operate in coastal littoral waters brings increased emphasis to mine warfare operations. The need exists to provide higher speed capability in smaller and lighter autonomous ve
