Research abstract

The objective of the work proposed herein is to refine and validate a fully integrated design tool for performance evaluation of armor systems consisting of ceramic front tiles and composite backplates. This tool will have applicability in the developmentof various multifunctional armor systems subjected to wide ranges of projectile and blast threats. The Phase I program was successful in demonstrating the integration of Materials Sciences Corporation's composite and ceramic failure models into LS-DYNA for predicting deformation and failure of various composite armor panels subjected to high velocityprojectile impact. The Phase I results provide good correlation with experimental data including major fiber failure modes, delamination distribution and V50 of composite panels. The Phase II program will extend the damage and energy dissipation prediction capabilities to a wide range of composite materials. Material characterization will be carried out to provide material properties for the progressive failure models. One majorgoal of the Phase II study is to develop and validate the analysis methods for design of fiber reinforced composite backplates used in armor systems. For validation of the composite models, armor system consists of metal and ceramic front plates andcomposite backing plates will be designed and tested. The product of the Phase II program will be validated composite and ceramic failure prediction modules which will operate within the proven LS-DYNA dynamic code environment.
