Advanced Modular Power Systems, Inc.
The Alkali Metal Thermal to Electric Converter (AMTEC) is a static energy conversion device that operates at thermal to electric conversion efficiencies that have reached 19% and are expected to reach 25% to 30% in mid 1996. These systems operate silently, with no moving parts and can utilize any source capable of delivering heat at 700oC to 900oC. Because they are light weight and can remain at nearly full efficiency while operating with 'exhaust' temperatures up to 600 K, they can use very compact, low mass, radiator systems in space power applications. These modest radiator requirements also allow AMTEC systems to be adaptable to a wider variety of spacecraft configurations for deep space missions. This project will develop a Directed Reflectivity Condenser (DRC) that will demonstrate the feasibility of an improved AMTEC condenser component. Phase I will investigate the potential for adding 5% to 7% to the system efficiency. Experimental work will develop a new cell using a DRC and measure its performance. AMTEC analytical models will then be used to determine the utility of using DRC cells in a full scale system. Phases II and III will demonstrate full scale cell and system performance at the 100+ watt level and show that they can be assembled into units appropriate for use in spacecraft and remote site systems.
Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: As stand-alone modules, the same AMTEC cells that can be assembled into systems for spacecraft can be utilized as modules for residential generators in continuous gas furnaces, for remote power site power, in recreational vehicles, for rural power generation from biomass fuels, and for cathodic protection of pipelines.
