Research abstract

The KILDARE sonic Oil-Spill Emulsification System (SOSES (TM)) is based on an ultrasonic emulsifier as a self-contained system, mounted on a towable sea-going catamaran aluminum sled. For quick response to an oil-spill, SOSES (TM) Processor Sleds can ba air-lifted to the oil-spill site and, using lical ships of opportunity, immediately deployed. The utilization of natural nutrient-enhancing emulsifying agents results in an output from the Sled-Processor that is a stable oil-in-seawater emulsion suitable for rapid bioremediation by the oceans indigenous oil-eating bacteria. The operationally difficult, ineffective, and tardily deployed skimmer oil-recovery ships would not be required. ANTICIPATED BENEFITS: The potiential for commercial use of this technology is extremely high. Potential users are oil companies; the Navy; the Coast Guard; etc. Applications of the SOSES (TM) to process bilge water contamination will also be important.
