Research abstract

This proposal suggests a method to develop efficient energy conversion systems for power beaming by mid-infrared lasers. The technical objectives will concentrate on studying an InAs photovoltaic cell which can be used for IR energy conversion. The photovoltaic cell design will be achieved by performing design computations to confirm the desired conversion concepts in the wavelength range from 1 to 3 microns. The effect of different design parameters will be analyzed, including the use of FA, AL or P incorporation to raise the band gap of the material, and the use of pseudomorphic window layer material for reduction of surface recombination velocity. Computer models will verify that power beaming in the mid-infrared will be a competitive alternative to conventional power sources. Effects of on-orbit thermal effects for several configurations will also be analysed. The cell design in phase I will be fabricated and its efficiency tested in Phase II.
