Research abstract

The overall objective of the Phase I program is to accomplish the preliminary design of a head-helmet support device which will significantly reduce the magnitude of maneuvering and ejection loads imposed on the aircrews cervical column. Other objectives to be met by the device include proper positioning and alignment of the head during ejection and high G maneuvering, while allowing unimpeded head and torso movement required during combat and routine operations. The program will identify and quantify functional requirements and parametric ranges of the support system. Through a structured scheme of alternative load paths, various candidate concepts will be synthesized for evaluation in a trade study. Optimality will be established on the basis of functional adequacy, manufacturing and operating costs, durability, environmental effects on aging, etc. Completion of the Phase I effort will accomplish the preliminary design of a helmet- head support system for reducing neck injuries sustained during maneuvering and ejection.
