Research abstract

X-RAY IMAGING AND INSPECTIONS PLAY AN INCREASING ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF MODERN MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUE. THE INCREASING DEMAND FOR HIGH-RESOLUTION INSPECTION AND FOR INSPECTION AS AN ADJUNCT TO CRITICAL MANUFACTURING STEPS HAS GENERATED A NEED FOR NEW, FLEXIBLE, COMPACT, HIGH-RESOLUTION SOURCES. THE USE OF THIN-FILM CONVERTORS MOUNTED ON COOLED DIAMOND TRANSMISSION SUBSTRATESPROMISES TO OPEN A BROAD RANGE OF NEW DESIGN TECHNIQUES. THIS PROGRAM WILL EVALUATE THE FEASIBILITY OF IMPLEMENTING THESE TECHNIQUES AND DEVELOP GUIDE LINES FOR DESIGN PARAMETERS. A COMBINATION OF SEMI-EMPIRICAL MODELING AND EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION WILL BE USED TO ATTACK THE CRITICAL PROBLEMS OF THIN-FILM ADHESION AND SUBSTRATE STRESS. USE OF COMBINATION NATURAL/SYNTHETIC DIAMOND STRUCTURES WILL ALSO BE STUDIED.
