Research abstract

THE FEASIBILITY OF DIAMOND CERAMICS HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED BY CONSOLIDATING DIAMOND POWDER WITH CVD DIAMOND TO NEAR FULL DENSITY PRODUCING DISKS OF SEVERAL MILLIMETER THICKNESS. RESEARCHERS ARE DEVELOPING A HIGH TOUGHNESS DIAMOND MATRIX COMPOSITE. SAMPLES IN WHICH CUBIC BORON NITRIDE POWDER IS INCORPORATED IN A CVD DIAMOND MATRIX FOR ENHANCING TOUGHNESS ARE BEING FABRICATED. MECHANICAL TESTING IS BEING PERFORMED TO EXAMINE FATIGUE AND FRACTURE PROPERTIES. THIS NEW MATERIAL IS BEING PROCESSED IN USEFUL SHAPS AND EXHIBITING SUPERIOR HARDNESS, EXCEPTIONAL TOUGHNESS, AND HIGH THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY.
