Research abstract

"For this Phase I project, Medantic Technology (MT) proposes to enhance the SCORM information model by creating an expanded set of meta-data elements and content for learning objects used specifically in the medical education domain. To support themeta-data content, MT will provide a concept-based terminology whose foundation and structure are based upon standard medical terminologies such as the National Library of Medicine's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and the Unified Medical Language System(UMLS). To further support the creation of SCORM-compliant learning objects and to demonstrate the use of the new meta-data set, MT will design and develop a raw digital asset indexing tool that uses the concept-based terminology for cataloging sharablecontent objects (SCOs). Finally, MT will demonstrate the search and retrieval advantages afforded by use of the concept-based indexing system.Phase II efforts will expand and build upon Phase I work by demonstrating cross-over applicability of the new meta-data sets to non-medical education domains. Efficiency of the indexing and retrieval tools will be evaluated. Integration of the resultingDigital Asset Management System (DAMS) with Web-based instructional development tools will be achieved and value testing of the complete integrated DAMS will be conducted through time-use studies. As the use of sophisticated and expensive multimedia in education accelerates, there is a great need in mu
