Research abstract
Air Force bare base shelters are "minimal facilities" designed to be rapidly transported, easily erected, weather resistant, and able to withstand some level of protection against attack. Due to these requirements, structural design is ideally carried out through an optimization process where weight, strength, bulk, and other design requirements are studied through trade-off analysis. Through this process lightweight composite material has become the material of choice. Unfortunately, the complex structure of composites does not allow for ease of determination of structural integrity under dynamic or even some static conditions due to its highly anisotropic nature and strain rate strength dependency. To remedy this situation, a modeling technique is proposed to be developed based on philosophy of approach beginning with analytical modeling leading to numerical modeling. Fundamentals of the basic properties of polymer honeycomb core material combined with analysis of the individual composite components of face plates and adhesive will be studied by experts in materials. Dynamic loading response of the composite material will be analyzed by experts in both anisotropic materials and shock physics. The philosophy of approach proposed has led to the development of breadthroughs in other shock physics types of problems including projectile penetration and nuclear weapon shock wave analysis.
