Research abstract

We propose to develop automatic rezoning algorithms for general-purpose 2-D and 3-D Lagrangian hydrocodes. Rezoning allows treatment of ballistic problems involving very large deformations, such as warheads and penetrations. Unlike erosion techniques, rezoning allows continued modeling of failed material. A previously developed and demonstrated 2-D rezoning algorithm will be extended to 3-D through a structure programming approach. In Phase I, we will recode the current 2-D version into modular form, and define specifications for these modules. This algorithm will be implemented in the EPIC-2 hydrocode, and demonstrated with several test problems, including warhead functioning and deep penetration. Then, we will define specifications for 3-D versions of the modules, with an outline of the scheme for each module. Phase II will complete the development of the 3-D rezoner, which will be implemented in the EPIC-3 hydrocode.
