Research abstract

A low rate, very high energy metal-dissolved oxygen fuel cell is proposed as a power source for autonomous buoy operation. The goal is to provide continuous delivery of at least 35 watts power for at least 6 months (151.2 KWH). The energy density of thelow rate system is estimated to be in excess of 500WH/Kg and 120WH/liter (including a DC-DC Converter). The Phase I effort will focus on the evaluation of several candidate metal anode constructions and metal/catalyzed metal oxygen reduction electrodes.Avery low cost, seaworthy power source will find wide application in defense, scientific, and recreational applications where a safe, extremely high energy density power source is a requirement.
