Research abstract
Retention of learned skills is a key issue in the efficiency and effectiveness of training. This research takes a systematic approach to identifying, measuring, and validating a wider range of retention-relevant variables than has been studied before. The scientific focus is on a retention model that will identify effects of various practical variables on training retention. The practical focus is on a computerized procedure that will allow training practitioners to input key aspects of the training situation and learn the optimal means of training as well as the practical effects of various training decisions. This implementation of the retention model represents an important step in bridging the gap between science and practice. The model will be identified by a literature review on skill retention and models of skilled performance. We will then develop and refine a means of measuring these variables in a Inventory of Task and Instructional Characteristics (ITIC), with different versions for administration to task experts, training personnel, and trainees. Phase I will also include development of a prototype computer module to demonstrate the decision-making procedure. We will also refine a plan for Phase II validation of the ITIC and completion of the computerized procedure.
