Research abstract

A novel application of electromagnetic hardware technology used in military radar and signal processing algorithms are combined to detect and locate both metal and dielectric targets. The application of hardware technology can provide a man-portable system for battlefield use. These are mature technologies and most major design issues have been discussed in previous S*R work. S*R will investigate the design issues both analytically and experimentally to define the system concept and gather data on metallic and dielectric materials of interest. The result from this effort will be a specification of the S*R Mine Detection System. Development of a sensor to locate buried targets would have commercial value to the utility companies, being used to locate "lost" underground pipes. The commercial market for such a location/detection device includes both government for military uses and private utilities. Application of these methods to non-destructive testing would provide additional commercial market.
