Research abstract

MAXDEM PROPOSES TO PREPARE NEW THERMOPLASTIC POLYQUINOLINES WHICH ARE DESIGNED TO POSSESS EXCELLENT COMBINATIONS OF THERMOOXIDATIVE STABILITY AND DESIRABLE ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES. SAMPLES OF THE NEW POLYMERS WILL BE CAST INTO FILMS AND PROVIDED TO THE POLYMERIC MATERIALS DIVISION AT NASA LANGLEY RESEARCH CENTER FOR EVALUATION OF MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES. THE AROMATIC POLYQINOLINES ARE CHARACTERIZED BY VERY HIGH GLASS TRANSITION TEMPERATURES, AND GOOD RETENTION OF PROPERTIES BELOW TG. IN ADDITION, THE DIELECTRIC PROPERTIESOF ONE DERIVATIVE ARE REPORTED TO BE EXCELLENT. TOUGH, TRANSPARENT POLYQUINOLINE FILMS MAY BE CAST FROM SOLUTION, AND REQUIRE NO POST-CURE STAGES. THIS COMBINATION OF PROPERTIES SUGGESTS THAT POLYQUINOLINES MAY BE USEFUL AS FILMS AND COATINGS IN AEROSPACE APPLICATIONS. BASED ON STRUCTURE/PROPERTY RELATIONSHIPS OBSERVED IN POLYIMIDE CHEMISTRY, WE PROPOSE TO TAILOR THE POLYQUINOLINE STRUCTURE IN AN EFFORT TO OPTIMIZE PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS.
