Research abstract

THE HARD AND SOFT X-RAY SIGNAL RESPONSES TO A SAWTOOTH CRASHARE BEING USED TO MEASURE THE ENERGETIC ELECTRON DIFFUSION COEFFICIENT, D, AND THE THERMAL ELECTRON HEAT CONDUCTIVITY, E, SIMULTANEOUSLY UNDER IDENTICAL PLASMA CONDITIONS. PHASE I EMPLOYS A REPRESENTATIVE SET OF SOFT AND HARD X-RAY SAWTOOTH OSCILLATIONS FROM THE TEXAS EXPERIMENTAL TOKAMAK (TEXT) TO DEVELOP THE MATHEMATICAL MODELING NECESSARY TO MEASURE D/ E. USE OF THE SOFT X-RAY SIGNAL TO MEASURE E IS A STANDARD DIAGNOSTIC TECHNIQUE. HOWEVER, THE CONCOMITANT HARD X-RAY SIGNAL THAT CAN BE OBSERVED IN TOKAMAKS WITH AN ENERGETIC ELECTRON POPULATION HAS NOT BEEN EXPLOITED IN ANY DETAIL, EVEN THOUGH IT PRESENTS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO COMPARE ENERGETIC AND THERMAL ELECTRON TRANSPORT. THE DEVELOPMENT OF A DETAILED DIAGNOSTIC TECHNIQUE FOR MEASURING D AS WELL AS E DURING THE SAME SAWTOOTH CRASH, WILL ALLOW THE ENERGY DEPENDENCE OF THE ELECTRON TRANSPORT TO BE INVESTIGATED TO OBTAIN CRUCIAL INFORMATION ON MECHANISMS RESPONSIBLE FOR ANOMALOUS ELECTRON THERMAL HEAT LOSS IN TOKAMAKS. IN PARTICULAR, THE MEASUREMENT OF D/ E CAN DETERMINE WHETHER THE ANOMALOUSLY LARGE ELECTRON THERMALLOSSES IN A PARTICULAR TOKAMAK ARE DUE TO ELECTROSTATIC OR INTRINSIC MAGNETIC FLUCTUATIONS.
