Research abstract
A significant problem for stakeholders in large satellite systems is the difficulty in getting data about these systems when it is most needed - in orbit and during critical anomalous situations. Near-field diagnostic measurements - including visual andinfrared images and close-range RF measurements - would provide the tools necessary to examine the performance, anomalies, and failures of a target spacecraft on orbit. While most of the imaging sensor systems are relative mature technologies withcommercially available components, the RF measurement system is less developed and is the focus of this Phase II effort. AeroAstro's goal in Phase II is the laboratory demonstration of a prototype RF Probe. AeroAstro will develop the RF Probe designsufficient for a Preliminary Design Review and will then will prototype the hardware and software and demonstrate its performance through laboratory testing. The probability of a space-qualifiable RF Probe design resulting from this effort issignificantly enhanced by virtue of AeroAstro's extensive experience developing small satellites, small satellite components and RF transponders and transceivers. While AeroAstro sees numerous dual-use opportunities for the RF Probe technology, the PhaseII development effort will focus on developing a system for remote sensing of on orbit spacecraft.
