Research abstract

THE PHASE I RESEARCH IS ASSESSING THE FEASIBILITY OF USING HARMONIC CONVERSION FOR THE EFFICIENT PRODUCTION OF 50-MW-LEVEL, 10 TO 30 GHZ RADIATION TO POWER A NEXT-GENERATION ELECTRON-POSITRON TEV-LEVEL COLLIDER. THE HARMONIC CONVERSION PROCESS BEING STUDIED EMPLOYS A SPATIOTEMPORALLY MODULATED GYRATING ELECTRON BEAM GENERATED IN A CYCLOTRON AUTORESONANCE ACCELERATOR, DRIVEN BY A 60 MW STANFORD LINEAR ACCELERATOR CENTER KLYSTRON. THE BEAM IS TYPICALLY ACCELERATED TO 1 MEV, WITH A CURRENT OF ABOUT 50 A. EFFICIENT EXTRACTION OF POWER AT THE 4TH TO THE 10TH HARMONIC OF THE KLYSTRON FREQUENCY IS ANTICIPATED BECAUSE THE BEAM ELECTRONS ARE NOT DISPERSED IN PHASE AS THEY GIVE UP THEIR GYRATION ENERGY INTO FAST GUIDED WAVES IN A DOWN-TAPERED MAGNETIC FIELD. DESIGNS FOR PROOF-OF-PRINCIPAL HARMONIC CONVERTERS THAT MAXIMIZE OVERALL CONVERSION EFFICIENCY AND MINIMIZE UNDESIRED MODE COMPETITION ARE BEING CREATED.
