Research abstract

SDL proposes to develop an optically pumped mid-IR semiconductor laser. The optically pumped laser will be grown via LP-MOCVD and have an output power in excess of 100mW. A 2.0 um semiconductor laser will be used as the optical pump source for pumping through a substrate. Growth of an optically pumped structure is easier since it is undoped. Simplified processing is also another major advantage for optical pumping versus a laser diode. Some of the applications for mid-IR lasers are in IR-countermeasure devices and environmental sensing or monitoring.
