Research abstract

Not Available We propose the development of a novel diode laser pumped cooling device. The device can be readily adapted to the high powered cooling requirements of gimbaled optics assemblies, detectors, and electronics. The cooling medium for our device is molecular-based and has inherent advantages over existing mechanical cryogenic coolers. The optical cooling effect is based on anti-Stokes fluorescence laser cooling in the near infrared spectral region. Our innovative features include no moving parts, operation at convenient laser wavelengths, inherent energy efficiency, solid state design, small size and weight, immunity from electromagnetic interferences, long operational lifetime, and inexpensive to manufacture. The Phase I program will theoretically and experimentally determine the feasibility of the concept.
