Research abstract

A Phase I effort to identify frequency reuse plans, array geometries and antenna characteristics, space-time filtering structures, and adaptive algorithms suitable for use on a cellular radio base station to provide range extension and capacity enhancement is proposed. The effort focuses on wireless communication systems, such as GSM, DCS1800, and DECT, that use Gaussian Minimum Shift Keyed (GMSK) signals. The statistical properties of these signals are exploited by novel filtering structures and adaptive algorithms developed by Mission Research Corporation and its consultants to separate up to 2M co-channel signals of interest using an M-antenna array, or to separate up to M co-channel signals of interest with substantially higher signal quality than conventional space-time filtering structures are capable of. The quality of service, enhancement of overall system capacity, and computational complexity of the candidate solutions will be evaluated using computer simulations in Phase I, with the most promising solutions being identified for more extensive and implementation on a hardware test-bed to be designed for demonstration of successful uplink operation in Phase II.
