Research abstract

79661S The costs of gas separation and pervaporation membrane processes are high because of the large number of pressure vessels, pipes, flanges and valves required for these plants. This project will develop a low-cost membrane module configuration that is expected to reduce installed module costs by a factor of two. This dramatic reduction in system capital cost will significantly change the competitiveness of gas separation and pervaporation technology in a number of important applications. Phase I will design the membrane module configuration. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The new membrane module configuration should be widely applicable to gas and pervaporation separation operations. Initial applications are expected to include the separation of nitrogen from low-quality natural gas streams and the separatation of ethanol from fermentation broth by pervaporation in the production of bioethanol.
