Research abstract

For this Phase I effort, Observera, Inc. proposes to develop a model based approach for deriving the parameters of an airborne imaging unit from the images collected during its flight. In order to concentrate Phase I efforts on feasibility and on the difficult problems of (1) developing the sensor model, (2) developing its associated error model, and (3) deriving an approach to correct an initial estimate of the imaging systems parameters, we will make maximum use of GOTS/COTS software for other aspects. For the sensor model, we will use a perspective-projective transformation matrix (PPTM) in homogeneous coordinates. For the error mode, we will analyze the impact of errors in the parameters of the PPTM on the results of the projection of the image to the Earth's surface. The projected image will be orthorectified and registered to a reference image or map. The error analysis will then be used to formulate a method for allocating the corrections derived from the registration back to the parameters of the PPTM.
