Research abstract
The Unitifed Build (UB) software implements communications, database management, and siplay functions required to develope a C3I system. Int its NTCS-A and OSS variants, UB software has been fielded on over 200 US Navy ships, several naval Intelligence Centers, Joint Command Centers, US Coast Guard ships and in Allied facilities. As such, the software presents a rich envrionment for building powerful decision aids to assit tactical commanders. As the developer of the UB, INRI is uniquely qualified to perform ther esearch and development of AI based tactical decision aids. The proposed research effort will investigate the feasibility of embedding Artificaial Intelligence (AI) applications with the UB architecture. Unlike conventional approaches, the research will no propose use of specialized AI machines, but will explore approaches which utilize existing DTC-II and TAC-III platforms, and is portable to future computing platforms. The proposed research will emphasize an approach which truly integrates into the UB architecture, including conformance to Grapical User Interface (GUI) style guides, use of existing UB databases (tracks, comms, etc.) rather than maintaining duplicate copies, and operation in a distributed netowrked envornment. Key architectural issues to address include LAN loading, precictable performance, distributed processing, and integration versus federation.
