Research abstract

The objective of this research is to verify a new, lightweight fuel injection (atomizing) technique for heavy fuel engines JP-5, JP-8 and diesel). The primary goal is to provide a very lightweight system, with cold start capability and good performance, that is suitable for Unmanned Air Vehicle heavy fuel engines. Preliminary experimental testing of one concept has indicated that the proposed new atomizing technique is viable. The concept was used to start, at 0o F and hot run, a light frame, heavy fuel engine. The research program will involve investigation of various combinations of high pressure injection and atomizing approaches; to establish the best method to operate conventional piston engines and Migrating Combustion Chamber (MCC) engines. The program starting point will be the previous experimental work and search of the latest literature. An analytical model will be developed, and some prototype testing of selected approaches will be performed. The research will compare performance based on achieving very small Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) particle size required for quick gasification and rapid combustion. In addition, system weight, size, complexity and overall operating performance will be evaluated to establish the best approach for a Phase II development, fabrication and demonstration program.
