Research abstract

Fine Steering Mirror (FSM) technology supports rapid slewing between targets in a dense target cluster for enhanced discrimination and line-of -site jitter compensation. FSM are applicable to a number of programs including future seeker variants that willincorporate LADAR in many MDA programs such as Sea Based Midcourse, Ground Based Midcourse and Theater High Altitude Area Defense. As the LADAR systems technologies evolve and fielding such systems becomes a reality the need is increased for a highperformance flight-qualified FSM at lower cost.Such pointing and tracking optical systems, are in general, limited in terms of angular resolution and residual jitter by the servo control bandwidth and surface figure error of the pointing mechanism both of which stabilize the line of sight.Additionally the ability to survive launch vibration and shock environments is necessary for mission success. The proposed effort extends the ability of recently developed FSM to provide additional surface figure and control bandwidth performance in harsh vibration environments.
