Research abstract

A new concept for a high pressure electric metering pump for liquid will be prototyped and tested. The pump consists of two stages. The first stage is an electrical reciprocating pump that creates hydraulic pressure to actuate the second stage. The second state is a metering pump. The advantages of the new metering pump are: 1) The pump operates without a control system. 2) Dynamic seals are eliminated. 3) Compact size and simplicity. 4) Improved reliability. 5) Low cost. A flow rate reference command sets the rotational frequency of an electric motor. The stroke distance is maintained constant and its accuracy does not affect the performance of the pump. The volume of liquid per cycle is maintained constant to a high degree of accuracy and repeatability. The design uses only off the shelf commercial components and is geared toward high quantity, low cost production.
