Research abstract

WE PROPOSE TO DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT PARALLEL ALGORITHMS FOR IMAGE COMPRESSION. OUR PROPOSED METHODS SATISFY THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA: (1) THEY ARE HIGHLY PARALLEL. WE PLAN A TRIAL IMPLEMENTATION ON THE 16,000 PROCESSOR MPP AT THE NASA GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER. (2) THEY ARE ADAPTIVE; THAT IS, THE CODE BOOK IS DYNAMICALLYMODIFIED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF PATTERNS THAT ARE DISCOVERED WITHIN THE IMAGE. (3) THEY ALLOW VARIABLE FIDELITY; THAT IS, THE USER CAN SPECIFY THE DEGREE (UP TO NONE) OF LOSS OF INFORMATION DURING COMPRESSION.
