Research abstract

Our Phase II goal is to develop (model, design, fabricate and test) a miniaturized biofuel cell capable of generating energy from biomass to power the OFW sensor suite. Phase I goals were successfully met by demonstrating a prototype using glucose as fuel. In contrast to conventional technologies, this biobattery promises to be compact/lightweight, require little/no logistical support (re-supply), is reusable and environment friendly. Several innovations were highlighted: MEMS/microfluidics-based liquid handling (high surface to volume ratio leading to enhanced electrochemical reactions) and use of simulation (physics)-guided approach for engineering and design optimization. Critical issues limiting the performance were identified. Phase II will focus on improving power density and stability, via (a) incorporation of microbes that operate at very high thermodynamic efficiency at the anode (reduced fuel consumption and higher current generation), (b) engineering novel microfluidic circuits to overcome the limitations identified in Phase I and (c) development of specially engineered microelectrodes for maximizing electron transfer and stability. Commercialization is planned in consultation with RDECOM for Army applications. Motorola and other organizations have expressed a strong interest in similar technology for commercial applications. A multi-disciplinary team with proven expertise in biomicrosystems engineering, bioelectrochemistry and microfabrication has been assembled. Also,an external review board consisting of personnel from Army and Industry will be assembled for successful execution.
