Research abstract

English-speaking federated search users are not easily able to search non-English sources of information. This leads to the loss of information potentially useful to scientists and researchers. This project will design and develop a prototype search application that takes a search query in English and returns a result list with document titles and summary information in English. The native language aspects of the document collections, including the tools and tool interfaces needed to perform the translations, will be considered. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: Researchers wanting to search sources in Russian, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, and other languages should greatly benefit from an ability to identify foreign language documents in their area of specialization. This greatly extends the number of sources available to the researcher, leading to a broader search of literature in a subject area.
