Research abstract

Software development continues to be an ad hoc endeavor without much of a plan to guide the development. Nevertheless, software visionaries speculate that one day an engineer will be able to specify the function that a software module is intended toperform, and then a set of agents, each associated with a debugged module, would be able to coordinate among themselves and synthesize the desired result. While the state-of-the-art is a far cry from this vision, this SBIR effort is intended to make aquantum leap in this direction by reformulating software development as a synthetic, compositional process that exploits case-based planning, rule-based reasoning, and design patterns to guide software developers in the adaptive software constructionactivity. In Phase I, we created the system. Phase II will implement and transition a working prototype of the tool suite to DoD acquisition programs, PACOM, aerospace companies, and research institutes for evaluation and feedback.
